Honest Burgers is delicious, honestly

Updated: Jul 21, 2021

Honest Burgers food is delicious - honestly! Is that too clichè to give it away too soon at the beginning of this review? Not really. And you can try it yourself! Well, you have to! I have always been a burger lover so I had to experience one of the best burger restaurants in the country and guess what? Honest Burgers might be my favorite in town now!

Co-founded by friends Tom Barton and Philip Eeles in Brighton in 2009, Honest Burgers started out cooking great British burgers in a field at a local food festival. The following year they opened a tiny restaurant in Brixton Market and … the rest is really an interesting story. The two friends were making everything from scratch and cycling eight miles every day to pick up the best beef available. Honest Burgers launched their own south London butchery in 2017, which enabled them to make their own patties rather than buying them in from a butcher. They are the only burger company in the UK to do this, ensuring every single patty is made using the perfect proportion of high-quality chuck and rib cap beef from native breed Gloucestershire cows. And nothing else. Next door to the butchery is the Honest Kitchen, where sauces, relishes, pickles, drinks and chips are made from scratch. The company has different locations in London and nationwide. So we went down to the Covent Garden branch, cozy and nice. The location is perfect if you just want to grab food after a walk around the market.

The menu is limited, but you can choose from meat, chicken or vegan/plant based burgers, and if you need a gluten free bun, that’s a no problem!

As Faith and I sat down and scanned our QR code to have a look at the menu, I realised I knew I had to try the special of the month: the Thai Fried Chicken in collaboration with Wingmans, which is probably the greatest restaurant you can get your chicken wings from. The Thai Fried Chicken burger is a combination of free-range buttermilk fried chicken thigh, honey sriracha glaze, Thai slaw, crispy shallots, (I am not finished!) American cheese, ranch mayo and lettuce, all accompanied by their traditional rosemary salted chips. An exquisite bomb which your mouth would love. Faith opted for the Bacon Plant burger with vegan smoked gouda, shoestring fries, vegan bacon, ketchup, chipotle ‘mayo’ spinach and pickles with chips.

Our sides are obviously bacon gravy and onion rings, which are probably the biggest onion rings I have ever seen in my entire life.

We decide to cut both burgers in half and taste each other’s selection. Needless to say it was the best decision of the night. The tenderly chicken mixed with the honey sriracha glaze exploded in my mouth however, I could tasted the coriander, which I absolutely hate, if it wasn’t coriander, there was a bit of green that put me off a bit. I guess it was my fault though, because it’s visible in pictures.

The Bacon Plant burger is somewhat sweet, not as big as the Thai Fried Chicken burger, a great vegan option since you can’t really tell it was vegan. It tasted like a normal burger (but healthier!). Definitely something to go with if you’re vegan! The chips are plain without rosemary (by our choice), we use mayo and BBQ sauce to eat them. Delicious!

Our overall score is 8 stars out of 10. Do we suggest you to go? Yes, we do! Is it worth the price? Absolutely.

You have time until the first week of August to try the special Thai Fried Chicken burger.
