The second you step through the doors of Nikos’ Taverna at Mamma Mia: The Party, you are instantly transported out of the cold O2 straight to an ABBA-filled Greek adventure on the island of Skopelos where you’re welcomed to join Nikos and his family getting ready for the big show that evening.
I need to be quite honest, I don’t know any ABBA song, I think there’s too much hype and craziness around them but I still decide to give it a go with two friends.
We really could be on holiday in Greece, from the bougainvilleas climbing mottled walls to over-enthusiastic Brits waiting to get drunk. The venue is full and I know I walk in with a sceptic smile asking myself “what is it going to be like?” but I must admit, the restaurant set-like location is stunning and curated to the tiniest details.
The four-hour immersive experience falls into three acts, bookmarked by a surprisingly yummy three course feast with a lot of tzatziki sauce and delicious bread, filled with plenty of ABBA classics to sing-along to. For a Mamma Mia super-fan this is the place to be. The entire venue is engaging and everyone sings-a-long to the amazing performance from the super talented cast. Their performance was outstanding, from the acting to the singing to the choreography. Yes, if you’re wondering, phones are allowed (as long as you don’t call your auntie to show her what the Greek salad look like) but try to immerse yourself into the experience as much as you can - and if I did it, you can too!
After the performance, everyone is off the table ready to dance their night away to more ABBA songs with confetti, glitter and more singing.
There's no denying this is a pricey experience but it's so worth it if you want to channel your inner Julie Walters and feel like a Super Trouper for the night. Would I go again? Maybe not because the price is quite high but whether you’re a fan of the music or not, give it a try, it’s a must-do experience - it’ll make you smile and it’s the perfect escape to a windy and cold London not far from the city center.
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed getting whisked away to Skopelos with Nikos and the crew at Mamma Mia: The Party and recommend all ABBA fans to check out this unique experience. The Experience delivers a very fun and surprisingly daring show whilst in a very unpredictable atmosphere with hundreds of audience members to cater to.
