After a lot of hard work and anticipation, emerging singer-songwriter Amelie Jat announced the release of her brand new record, for the plot, which was released on the 20th October 2023, and oh my days it is honestly one of the best things I have had the honour of listening to.
What I love about this album is how Amelie has stepped forth in confidence and put her all in to the record, which just radiates all the qualities of one of the greatest emerging artists to rise up out of the 2023 music scene.
So with that in mind let’s take a closer look at the album and some of Amelie’s brilliant qualities. The record begins with opening track I’M OUT where we first get to hear her beautiful and powerful voice to give us a very heartfelt and honest song.
Other than being very catchy, I love how lyrically Amelie just says what is on her mind, and actually when you pay close attention to the words, it feels very moving particularly the line ‘I’m suffocating, six feet underground’.
There can be times where situations or even people in our lives make us feel like this, so when your able to listen to a song which reflect some of those raw feelings you also sense in your own mind, gives them a space where you can finally bring them to the forefront rather than brushing them to the side, that is a really powerful connection to hold on to.
From I’M OUT, we then move nicely on to Electric Butterflies and again we see Amelie showing us a flavour of what makes her such a talented songwriter, with every word being so poetic enhanced by the perfectly energetic aura of the song. Listening to the song is literally giving me butterflies too.
Two songs in to this album, and already I can confidently say as a newbie to the world of Amelie Jat, she’s already gained herself a new fan. The rest of the record continues to be just as awesome too and for any music fan I think you will be spoilt for choice, especially as we get to witness Amelie’s diverse style as an artist.
For instance Nostalgia is a much more intimate song as we get to hear Amelie’s more softer side, as she really opens up the vulnerable side of her heart but still manages to capture the full attention of the listener. Listening to a song like Nostalgia makes me feel like I am listening to someone who has the potential to be on a similar level to Taylor Swift or Maggie Lindemann.
If your looking for something that you can sing your heart out to then Faking Parties will be a good choice, especially the lines ‘you make me laugh, you make me cry, I want you, but you want the high, got me driving with my eyes closed, even my best friend’s brother knows’. I think anyone can listen to a song like Faking Parties and feel a real sense of resonance which when it comes to Amelie Jat is just one of her many super-powers.
Another of my faves on this album was 2028, because it is has such a positive feeling overall when you listen to it, and for a day dreamer like me is perfect choice just to listen to as you watch the world pass by.
My wild card choice from this record would have to be screaming crying throwing up because it is so candid and pure. I actually felt quite emotional listening to this song, but in quite in a way which was healing and comforting.
Consisting of 13 tracks, this album by Amelie Jat is something which will impact your life as a music fan in such a positive way, and hopefully once you check out the songs I highlighted as well as the rest of the album you will be able to experience for yourself just what makes Amelie so special.
Our journey does not end there however, because having being able to enjoy such a brilliant body of work, it was only right that I took the opportunity to speak to this talented soul herself to find out more.
Firstly congratulations on such an incredible record, have absolutely been loving every single moment. With it finally being out there in the world how liberating does that feel?
Amelie: Thank you so much, that’s so incredibly nice to hear! Releasing this album has definitely been an emotional journey to say the least, and now that it’s out in the world I do feel sort of relieved - like I’ve been holding my breath for the last 2 years and I can finally let it all out. But more than anything I’m just proud of this record and grateful for everyone who worked on these songs to make it the album it’s turned out to be.
As an artist in 2023, has this been a kind year or one that has kept you on your toes?
Amelie: I feel like the independent artist scene in the industry always keeps its artists on their toes, even when it’s been a really encouraging and promising year. I’ve had a lot of firsts in 2023, including Spotify Editorial Playlist placements, my first headline show in London, and I’m just about to start my first UK tour - it’s been an absolutely insane year, but more than anything it just makes me want to work even harder and continue to grow into an even better version of myself, both as a person and as an artist.
For a first time Amelie Jat fan, what is the best way to embrace your music?
Amelie: I would say that to embrace my music, you have to embrace your chaotic side and let yourself feel every single emotion coursing through your veins. I believe that music should always make you feel something, and the best way to experience this is to fully immerse yourself into the soundscape of the song, however it makes you feel. So dance around your room, cry in the car, blast it through your headphones on the train - be a part of the universe.
I absolutely love your style as a songwriter. In your eyes are some of the key elements that make up the DNA of ‘for the plot’
Amelie: For me, ‘for the plot’ feels very much like my coming-of-age, diary entry kind of collection, and I think there are a couple of songs in particular that make up the bare bones, the skeletal structure of the album: ‘Therapy’, ‘Faking Parties’, ‘YOU RUINED MY BIRTHDAY’ and ‘R.I.P.’ feel like the most defining tracks of the album in regards to its concept and idea of life being teenage cinema. But there must also be an energy that counteracts the energetic, punchier tracks - ‘Better’, nostalgia’ and ‘2028’ are those elemental counterparts.
I found it so hard to choose a favourite as I loved them all, but are there any particular tracks you are most special to you, or even any you are most proud of?
Amelie: It would be impossible to choose a singular track as they all mean different things to me as a songwriter but also since they’re all frozen moments of my actual life, but ‘nostalgia’ would have to be one of my absolute favourites as that was really the track that made me and my team go “oh, it’s time to make an album”. The lyrics in that song seem almost a bit too honest and raw, but that’s what I love about it. Other favourites would have to include ‘Electric Butterflies’, ‘R.I.P.’, ‘i’m so in love (i think i’m gonna be sick)’ and of course the song that started it all - ‘I’M OUT!’.
A huge thank you to Amelie for taking the time to speak to me. So there we go - we’ve given you a glimpse of what to expect on the new record and heard from Amelie herself.
All that is left to do is for ya’ll to go check out the album for yourself. Available on all major platforms this is one album you do not want to miss!
