A brand new year can only mean one thing for us music fans, the excitement of sinking our teeth into some fresh new music. With so much on offer, where do you even begin? Well one suggestion we have for all of our lovely readers is Bedsit and their debut EP, Dead Bands.
Released on 3rd February 2023, the interview sees the Hull band lay their gauntlet down as they introduce themselves to the world, with their four track body of work which promises to get that adrenaline pumping.
Not wanting to miss out we decided its only right we give the EP a listen ourselves, after all it would be rude not to. The EP begins with opening track Drip Feed which draws you in which is a mixture of being enticing, punchy and grabs your curiosity, before leading into the fiery vocals, which make you want to sing at the top of your lungs with every drop of energy in your body. Whether you mosh from the get go, dance like there is no tomorrow or just immerse yourself in the lyrics, Bedsit demonstrates automatically show you their potential. Drip Feed has a somewhat grungey feel to it, which reminds me of the likes of early INME or even Audioslave but with Bedsit adding their own flair for a 2023 re-boost.
So far so good, let’s move on to the second track, which comes in the form of Go Outside. What seals the deal for me is the lyrics, because I really find myself connecting and turning on my attentive ears to listen carefully to lines of what feels like an internal monologue but channelled in such a way which makes it just as raw, real and relatable to anyone else. Yes I am enjoying Go Outside, but as cliche as this sounds I find myself not just feeling the music, but being one with it too.
The third track and also title track Dead Bands, continues in that fashion bringing both great lyrics and refined composition together, where the you don’t just have the lyrics and vocals but also those engaging riffs, and guitar solos too - a sign of some sheer craftsmanship, which I can also imagine would be even more electric if ever I was lucky enough to see it performed live.
Having three unique tracks all special in their own way, but equally all play a part in a bigger narrative, the EP comes to a close nicely with the final track Eloquent which takes different qualities and inspirations from the other tracks, and compacts it into one slice of intense goodness bundled into just 1 minute 41 seconds. It might not sound like a lot, and normally I aint a fan of short tracks, but even for someone like me, Eloquent gains my automatic applause, and if anything taking in all the other tracks on the EP, makes me crave the music of Bedsit even more!
Based on what I have just heard, I just have this gut feeling that the Dead Bands EP, is just the beginning of great things to come for this Yorkshire and Humber band, as they don’t just put Hull on the map but also send a signal out to say ‘hello world, we are Bedsit and we mean business!".
