Hands up who amongst us loves a good bit of guitar-based alt rock? Well we are honoured to indulge you as we introduce you to one of the latest names we are excited about - Blueburst and their brand new album Significance.
Having released their debut single Vanish earlier in the year which in itself had wide support online amongst music fans, Significance is the perfect remedy for fueling those cravings even more as Craig Douglas Miller and Marty Willson-Piper give us a record centred around their deep rooted love of music.
While you may not necessarily be able to start a mosh pit with, I will say from the outset that this record will still leave you have you singing and dancing along and has so much on offer for any music fan regardless of age. Between them, Craig and Marty have a wealth of experience and talent between the pair of them, so Blueburst as a band overall are such a naturally perfect pairing of two great minds.
With that in mind lets jump right in as we get better acquainted with what Significance has to offer as an album. Beginning with opening track Vanish, having already been teased as a taster to the album back in March, this feels like that smile you have when you spot a familiar friend in the crowd with a welcoming smile. It just gets you in the mood, and for anyone hearing Blueburst for the first time you get to even witness some of their slick guitar solos making you imagine what it would feel like going to a Blueburst headline live show and the band stepping onto the stage with this song.
Having set the scene, we then move on to the second track Executioner's Song, which you find yourself chanting away to the words ‘everyone gather around me now to watch me die, don’t tell me that its not the best thing for you and I’ as Blueburst give us a powerful song which also not too heavy to resonate with. You have the perfect balance of great vocals, lyrics and rhythm.
All together the record has 11 tracks - and having heard just the first two songs so far, already I am liking what I am hearing, so lets continue to see what other hidden gems we can discover. I won’t go into every single track as there is so much variety on offer with Significance, but there are equally a few songs on the album which have personally caught my attention.
For instance Kick My Tires is the song that grew on, but by the end I was really loving it because it is such intricate and edgy track. It’s the track on the record where you can get a glimpse of Blueburst taking a step out of their comfort zone and pushing the boundaries of their creativity. Taking risks and not holding anything back - exactly what I look for the most when checking out a band for the very first time.
Similarly Bravado shows the band continuing to go in this vane as the band do their cover of the song originally performed by Canadian rock band, RUSH. Whereas the other tracks are quite fast paced, Bravado just draws you ever so gently but allows you to sense the connection building up in side of you. It is certainly one of the more atmospheric tracks on the album.
One final track I want to mention for now is Train In Vain which also as a fun fact will be a bonus track if you get yourself the CD rather than just stream online. It is such a classy and smooth song and shows a gentler and softer side to Blueburst especially when it comes to the songwriting. If you looking for another opportunity to chant along, then Train In Vain provides you with that chance, whilst also infused with the bands great craftsmanship as guitarists too.
So there we have it, just some of my thoughts on this exceptional new album by Blueburst. As a band it is hard to compare them to anyone else out there, and to be honest it would be unfair to do so anyway because based on the overall experience of Significance, they are creating waves in their own way to give us music which us as fans are blessed to be witnessing. Released on 20th October 2023, hope you are ready for something special because Significance is the gateway to your new favourite band!
