DAX - Rich Men North Of Richmond (Re-Mix)

Over the past few months, there is one person who has been catching my attention. What started as a random follow on my go-to music platform resulted in being drawn into a world where every time I heard of a new song on the horizon or witness some sneak previews on his social media page, the more excited I became.

For a long time I kept that secret, because whenever someone asked me ‘hey what you listening that has got you smiling?’, my response would be just to nod back and say ‘just something cool’.

Well I think it’s time to break that silence and introduce you to singer-songwriter DAX from Canada, and one of his latest tracks Rich Men North Of Richmond which was released on the 2nd September 2023. As a song the on its own is brilliant, but seeing it also recreated as a music video just elevates it into something so powerful which just fills your heart.

The video begins with the words ‘United We Stand, Divided We Fall’ which automatically as a fan makes me think, better pay attention, our main man has something important to say. With the vocals of Oliver Anthony setting the scene, we are soon handed over to DAX himself with his poignant words, expressed so openly and honestly. As an artist DAX is multi-talented, but with the first part of this song particularly we are able to really take full advantage of strengths when it comes to the art of rap.

For anyone who likes to invest themselves in the depth of lyrics such as myself, rap is a great way of really getting to the centre of an artist’s mind, but in a way that also encourages us to think to not just about what is being said, but to take notice of the world around us.

For instance with verses such as:

‘Descendants of Adam and Eve, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, there taking God out of the schools, out kids don’t know what to believe. From 6 to 18 the curriculum fails and Gen Z gets taught by their phones with force feeds that get sponsored and paid by companies. That’s how they attack us, they start with the youth. If you lie enough you will convince anybody the lies the truth…”

Just looking at that verse, wow it just gets you thinking about not just the generation of tomorrow but also what way society as a whole has played a part in that narrative. While none of us are perfect, the footsteps of our future are so important which is why I appreciate DAX so much because he has the courage to bring something so important to the forefront of our minds, in a world which would otherwise have us try and have us brush it under the carpet.

This is just one example, and while I won’t go through every verse in detail, what you will soon discover yourself is that DAX is infusing life with music to help us to unpack those deep thoughts we can sometimes have. To a person who feels fed up or even feels like they are down on their luck, this song is the perfect antidote by helping them to see that they are not alone, because DAX sees and hears you too.

With this song originally being written by country singer Oliver Anthony, DAX comes in and brings it to life even more with his own refreshing twist, helping you to see the song in a new light.

This re-mix is just one of the many examples of DAX’s potential, and having enjoyed many of his other songs over the summer, it makes me excited to think what this talented guy will present to us next. Currently touring across the US and Canada, let’s hope we don’t have to wait too long till we see him over here in the UK.
