No Rome’s latest single ‘Spinning’ had a lot to live up to following the last No Rome X The 1975 collaboration, 2018’s electro-pop ‘Narcissist’. This time, the Dirty Hit labelmates invited Charli XCX on board to form a new ‘pop supergroup’ almost 2 years in the making.
With vocals led by Charli XCX and No Rome and co-produced by No Rome and The 1975’s Matty Healy and George Daniel, the track is unsurprisingly upbeat melodically, with autotuning reminiscent of The 1975’s latest album ‘Notes On a Conditional Form’, yet it is a perfect fusion of the 3 artist’s styles.
The chorus’ repetition of ‘But you just keep spinning over there’ will be stuck in your head for hours after you hear it and you can easily see yourself dancing to this in a packed nightclub, singing the words back to the DJ … If we ever get to go back to a nightclub of course.
The lyrics can be read in a multitude of different ways but to me, No Rome and Charli XCX are referencing the feeling of being on a night out and seeing your ex or somebody you used to like. The opening verse reads like Charli making up a scenario of how things could have been with that person while they ‘just keep[s] on spinning over there’, not even acknowledging her existence.
The second and third verses see No Rome and Charli XCX sing about why their relationship with this person soured, singing ‘I must be causing you pain’. However, when reading verse 2, it sounds almost delusional, like they’ve convinced themselves that leaving that person has left them in pieces when in fact, it hasn’t at all, since they just. keep. spinning.
Alongside the track is the effortlessly cool single artwork which reinforces the feeling of dizziness that comes with ‘spinning’. Living in a kaleidoscope-of-colour world, animated characters of No Rome, Charli XCX, Matty Healy and George Daniel were designed by the insanely talented Japanese artist Hideyuki Tanaka and designer Samuel Burgess-Johnson, with some pieces up for auction for 3 chosen charities, Right Start, Girls Make Beats and One Tree Planted.
Right, after all that spinning, I’m going for a lie down.
