DMA’S - How Many Dreams?

Over the years Tommy, Johnny and Mason have earned the loved of music fans all over the globe with some of the best live music, releases and music videos than one could ever wish for. With 2023 being a year of great promise as the band push themselves further, in March social media went into a craze as our favourite Aussie trio announced the release of their brand new album - How Many Dreams?

Having had the pleasure of following the band’s journey as far back as 2014, news of this new this new record brought a huge smile to my face, because I just knew that is was guaranteed to be an album which reflects the growth of one of the greatest names in music around.

Before I continue with my thoughts, I will make it clear from the outset that if you are looking for what it means to go from strength to strength as a band, where the ability to take your breath away to the point where every single song brings boost of never ending adrenaline, well How Many Dreams? is the perfect representation of that.

The album begins with the opening and title track How Many Dreams? One word comes to mind - WOW! Putting their best foot forward, DMA’S introduce us to their new chapter, with a track which I can only describe as euphoric as it just draws you in, and that’s even without factoring in the vocals and the lyrics which are brilliantly executed. I love DMA’S and that is no secret, but I think this song makes me adore them ever more. If this is only the first track, my mind just cannot imagine how it will cope when I continue to listen to the rest of the album.

There are 12 impressive tracks on this album, and every one that has its own character and energy, but if you want a few tips of which songs to keep a close eye out for then I definitely have a few favourites.

For instance Everybody’s Saying Thursday’s The Weekend. Tommy, Johnny and Mason put alot of heart and soul when it comes to their songwriting, and for me this song we show their confidence in its prime. Yes I am a listening to a song that is making me want to dance and sway and sing along, but its also lyrically one which has grabbed my attention, whereby I can feel the connection where the lines we hear such as Step into the right light, In the dark times, Feeling in a cold rush and a cold sweat, I know you're coming by speak meaning into you life in quite a poetic way.

Another recommendation would be Fading Like A Picture. This is probably the closest you are going to get to a post-break up romance song, but you know what I like about this song is that is shows a different side to DMA’s which we may not be too familiar with. Its a much more gentler side, but one which is equally as powerful.

The same can be said about Jai Alai which in my opinion has such character and beauty to it. Listening to it made me a little emotional but also gave me that sense of butterflies in my stomach at the same time. It just shows that while its fun to dance non stop to their most energetic tracks, being able to also appreciate the more gentler side of their music is the true meaning of what it means to create an enriching a diverse listening experience.

My next suggestion when listening to this album would be to check out Something We Are Overcoming, which in my opinion I would describe as the wild card, because we see the DMA’S slightly dipping their toe into other genres whilst still retaining that unique DMA’S sound.

I wish I can continue and tell you about the rest of the tracks on the album but equally I don’t want to give away too many spoilers, because I wholeheartedly believe that to fully appreciate all the wonders that this album has to offer, How Many Dreams? is something to be experienced first hand.

As a fellow DMA’S fan, just when you think you had seen it all, this is definitely one of the best records to date and a front runner for best album of 2023. So what are you waiting for - get listening today!
