Easy Life want you ‘Stay Hopeful’ on new single, A Message to Myself

Leicester band Easy Life are gearing up for the release of their much-anticipated debut album Life’s a Beach. To coincide with the announcement, the quintet has released the album’s opening track, A Message to Myself alongside a music video and UK and European tour dates and you better believe I already have my ticket!

The track itself is a beautiful ballad about mental health and a reminder to keep going and keep doing you. In an Instagram post on the band’s page, Murray explains that the song urges us ‘to get better at listening to the positive voice in our heads, no matter how drowned out it may become’. The song is desperate to remind you that you are special and that ‘there is nobody else who can do you’.

It is pure in its desire to give affirmation and support to anyone listening and to tell them to stay true to themselves throughout everything life throws at them. Besides the beautiful lyrics, the vibe of the song is highly uplifting. Murray’s vocals are accompanied with a rousing choral backing alongside delicate violins as well as a rare appearance of a harpsichord which perfectly ties everything together and adds to the inspiring feeling of the tune.

The accompanying music video is equally poignant and thoughtful. It is entirely animated and revolves around lead singer Murray, and a fish representing the positive thoughts alluded to in Murray’s summary of the track. Murray is stuck inside of a fishbowl full of water, a clear allegory for him drowning in his negative thoughts and feeling under constant pressure. However, with him constantly, both inside and outside the bowl is the fish.

Across the video we see Murray struggle with a variety of suicide attempts however his positive thoughts talk him out of it each time until, at the end of the video, he is finally able to break free of the water and live again. The video tells a truly wonderful story despite it only being 2 and a half minutes long and I came away from it imbued with a sense of pride and a renewed self-worth, which is magical in itself.

Easy Life are one of the UKs most inventive and exciting new bands. They are truly unique, and I can’t think of a single band like them in the country in this moment. A Message to Myself is yet another string in their already impressive bow and, as we get closer to the release of Life’s a Beach, I can’t help but think that the hype will continue to grow.
