Earlier this week we caught up with up and coming singer-songwriter Charlotte Jane on her brand new release 'Get It Right' this is what she had to say when we spoke to her....
How have you found the response to the latest single so far?
The response to Get it Right has been amazing so far! I didn’t really know what to expect after not releasing a song for over a year… I wasn’t sure that anyone would be bothered if I put out new music. So yeah, to have so many people listening, connecting with the lyrics and loving the music video is wicked!
What is the story/inspiration behind the new track?
I wrote the song two years ago in LA with Dayyon Alexander and Jeff Shum. It sat in the notes section of my iPhone for those two years getting played in my car. I actually wanted to put it on my first EP but it just didn’t fit. The day before I went into the studio and wrote it, I’d used up my last bit of patience on a guy who had been messing me around for a while. I knew exactly what he was like but still I spent months waiting for him to prove me wrong. Such a waste of time. Get it Right is the anthem for the lightbulb moment when you realise your own self worth and stop letting people string you along. It sounds sad but it’s actually empowering.
On the new track you worked with songwriters who have worked with the likes of Demi Lovato and Camila Cabello, what was that process like? How did you end up working with them?
It was a session that my manager set up for me whilst I was in LA. She had a feeling that we would get along and write great stuff together. They’re some of my favourite creatives to be in a room with. They’re both the loveliest guys with the most amazing ideas! I remember Dayyon coming up with the backing vocal part that scores the entire track and the rest flowed from there. The tag line ‘did i get it right? yup’ was something I said in conversation I think.
What challenges have you faced this year in regards to lockdown and the live music industry? Has lockdown encouraged you to write a lot?
No, it did the complete opposite actually which is a real shame haha! I channeled my creativity in different ways though. I did a lot of cooking, hiking, photography, painting and gaming. I’m really inspired, creatively, now but that’s a very recent shift. Anyone who has followed my career so far would know that I’ve built everything so far from playing live shows and touring relentlessly. So yeah, it was definitely a real shock to the system when all shows stopped. I, like every artist on the planet i’m sure, cannot wait to get back on-stage with a real crowd as soon as it’s safe to do so.
Who are your biggest musical influences?
Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Coldplay, Amy Winehouse, Adele, Bon Iver…. The list is so so long haha! But those are the headline ones! I listened to so much music growing up and still listen to a real variety of artists now. I’m sure everything I listen to has influenced me in some way.
What has been your career highlight so far?
Selling out 5 headline shows last year! There have been more ‘high profile’ moments that have definitely been highlights but selling out my own shows was such a monumental feeling.
What are your plans for the new year?
To consistently release new music next year and really build up momentum. I really want to be in a position to drop my debut album by 2022.
