To coincide with her birthday, singer song writer Just Leila has released her debut EP entitled Just For Me, which sees her invite music fans to take a step into her world.
Consisting of 7 tracks, this EP has so much on offer, and for music fans like me who love paying special attention to lyrics this is a real chance to witness first hand Just Leila’s skills as a song writer.
So with that in mind lets take a bit of a closer look. The EP begins with opening track bits of pieces, which is absolutely stunning, and has a bit of a Sugarbabes vibe to it mixed with All Saints as Just Leila from the outset showcases her amazing voice. The lyrics are really poetic and flow so nicely. I particularly love how catchy the song is especially with lyrics such as ‘Champagne Flowing In My Veins, Today Is Every Single Day, Buffets Here To Entertain’.
The next track bébé? Is such a clever track because it allows for us to really see Just Leila’s multi-lingual skills with this song being written and sung predominantly in French. I may be a little rusty on my language skills myself, but I can still appreciate this song and its beauty. Sometimes writing something in any language other than English can be a bit of a risk, but I think in Just Leila’s case this is a gamble which has paid off quite well especially as it adds that extra touch of character and charm whilst also demonstrating her confidence as an artist.
I won’t go through every single track just so you are able to discover some of the other tracks yourself, so instead I will continue by picking out a couple of my favourites from the EP.
From bébé? we then move nicely on to don’t be alarmed, and I think this is one of those songs where we can really tell Just Leila really pushing herself both lyrically and sonically too. This song I feel merges together complexity and simplicity into one, and helps to create a well balanced and fascinating track which really helps you to focus. Her voice is even more stunning here, especially the way she effortless way she flows through a mixture of different vocal ranges, those high notes being impressive indeed. I absolute adore the fact that towards the Just Leila incorporates the sounds of a saxophone with something a touch of the operatic which just works so well.
The next song, more than dna is probably one of my favourite tracks on the EP. It kind of has a Persian vibe to it, mixed with Just Leila’s brilliant talent. As a lyric fan, I love the depth of the songwriting here especially lines such as ‘Wanting More From Life, Is Evolutionary Divine, Leaving Shit Behind, A Symptom of My Ever-Growing Mind.
What makes more than dna even more special to listen to as a fan is how we see Just Leila showcasing dual-languages within the context of the same song, which is so exceptionally done.
I cannot give you an overview of this great EP without also mentioning another favourite of mine, the desert song, and I love just how poetic the song is lyrically written and has some enchanting lines such as ‘I hear her singing in the sand, I hear her echo though the land, the winds they bring me to her feet’.
How does this EP end? I will that for you to discover for yourself, but what I will say about just for me, is how it is the perfect representation about who Just Leila is as a person who is comfortable within her skin.
So there we go just some of my thoughts on this exceptional new EP by Just Leila. As a collection of songs there are so many intricate levels, with each track having its own unique identity. Just Leila was very much relatively new on my radar, but I am so glad I had the pleasure of being able to discover more of her sensational talent all thanks to this EP.
