M.T Goins Releases Demo 101

Having had a brilliant journey as a founding member of Virginia rock band, The Rams, M.T Goins has released his solo EP, Demo 101.

Consisting of 4 tracks, the EP is a prime opportunity to take a look into M.T Goins as a songwriter and really focus us on his strengths as an artist. Having heard the news of this new solo project, I couldn’t help check out this new body of work for myself.

We begin with opening track I die a little every day which is just flowing with dark poetry and mixes it with an acoustic style, which really helps you to really focus on each and every word. I really love how M.T Goins is wasting no time in taking us to the centre of those raw emotions, because this is a song where you are encouraged to connect and feel.

Next on the EP is Man of Bugs which almost has a bit of a deep South vibe but wrapped with a layer of darkness, and feels like such a cult track, like something I would expect to hear in an  Quentin Tarantino film. Man of Bugs has so many twists and turns, and it just lures you in deeper and deeper with each segment showcasing M.T Goins’ immense creativity. Deffo one of my favourite songs for sure.

Following on from this we then come to Cast Into Darkness, which has this fragile but beautiful appeal to it as it takes us on a journey of darkness and light. The vocals are just mesmerising and I think the keys just allow the song to flow so naturally, with pockets of synth infused along the way. The thing to note about this song, is despite its name, Cast Into Darkness is not heavy but more a case of a song which allows M.T Goins to express himself in such an organic way, and as a result gives us the opportunity to really savour the brilliant music we are being exploited to.

The EP comes to a close with final track All The Places I Haunted. Serenading us with his exceptional song writing which just pulls us in, I am really intrigued and quietly excited by the darkness of this song because it encourages you take a step outside of your comfort zone. As a track, All The Places I Haunted is very catchy in places especially with lines such as ‘these are the places I am haunted, bury me I am unwanted’, which you will find your self naturally humming to yourself to as you immerse yourself deeper and deeper into the music. M.T Goins has this ability to make his music ever so intricate with a range of different layers, and this really shows when you listen really carefully with an attentive ear to All The Places I Haunted.

As far as this EP and collection of songs is concerned, I for one am so happy to have had the chance to listen to Demo 101 because I truly feel that M.T Goins is a man of many talents who embarking on a journey of something very special. I look forward to see where this EP leads him to next!
