If there you love new talent as much as we do here at DARKUS, then we highly recommend you keep reading as we introduce you to emerging and multi-talented artist Matt Glickman. On 10th November 2023, after a lot hard work and passion, Matt released his debut album Live from Starks, Maine 10.1.22.
What I love and truly respect about Matt from my initial impressions of him is that his music has so much heart and powerful beauty to it. There is also the fact that other that being skilled as a singer-writer who has the ability to make you experience such raw emotion as a listener, is that he is quite the maestro when it comes to the finesse as keyboardist. It is hard to describe, but it is like the same depth he has as a lyricist flows through him as he makes that connection as he place each and every note on the key.
Having had the privilege of sampling the album myself, it feels only natural rather than tease you all with my initial thoughts, that we go that extra step further and delve deeper into just some of the magnificent tracks which make this album such as a remarkable body of work. This is not just music, it is art in its purest and highest quality.
The album begins with opening track Steady As Footprints, where you automatically feel surrounded by the sound, like the beckoning of nature, inviting you to take a step into the wilderness, and the sensation of adrenaline building up as you move closer and closer. With this being a predominantly piano and keyboard based album, I think the way that the rhythm and the way that Matt lays his fingers over each key really helps to set the scene. After successfully drawing you we are then able to witness Matt’s open, raw songwriting, which feels like it has come the inner core of those tender thoughts.
This opening track, is not just any because with it being just under 10 minutes, it has a lot of texture and is multi-layered where ambience, songwriting, the flow of the keys just work as one to produce such a stunning song.
From Steady As Footprints, the record then moves onto Colour Fields which is also one of my favourite pieces on the album. The introduction especially and the beautiful way that Matt plays the keys, especially the chords and couples it with such intricate lyrics. It is makes you feel that you have a song which also has such a radiant glow to it. I cannot even begin to comprehend just how phenomenal it would be to hear and watch a song such as Colour Fields being performed live. This is music of a symphony style level, and wow Matt Glickman representing a new era of talented artists and instrumentalists having such abundant talent on this scale just blows my mind!
There are all together 7 tracks on this debut album, and while that may not seem like a lot, the important thing to remember is the good ol’ words of wisdom we sometimes hear, quality not quantity, and this is exactly what you get when listening to an album like Live from Starks, Maine 10.1.22. I don’t want to ruin the experience for you by giving away all the finer details of this album, because ultimately I must leave some mystery back so you go an discover the world of Matt Glickman for yourself.
What I do want to do though is just pick up and hight just one or two other tracks which caught my attention when listening to the record. Firstly, Leave It To Me and it is just such a cool, upbeat and funky song and has a different energy to some of the other tracks. If you really look closely you can see similarities to likes of Ahmad Jamal. This track also sees Matt team up with friend Darby Sabin on guest vocals, someone who Matt had the pleasure of working with when the pair were in a band together in an early life. Leave It To Me just feels so uplifting to listen to, and it is the type of track where lines such as ‘ listen to the river, going to roll my worries right away, everything that came before is just a passing night, okay, got to let it shine, leave it to me, oh I am going to ease your troubled mind’, just fill you with such warmth.
Maybe It’s For The Best is continues this warmth, and for this track we hear more of Darby’s great vocals especially at the start of the song for a great solo, and the way that both her and Matt sing in such harmony during especially to the lines ‘maybe its for the best’ is just so beautiful. It is a song which Matt and Darby have a fun singing, and you can really feel that when you are listening too, which is what makes it all the more enjoyable as a listener.
Having worked my way through this album, I feel absolutely blessed to have been able to experience it for myself, and by the end has resulted in me in having even more admiration and respect for Matt Glickman. Each and every song on this album has its own unique beauty, and as a collective body of work the flow between each track is done with such style.
