For as long as I can remember, I have always been a huge admirer of US singer-songwriter Noah Cyrus. There are so many times the music she has released has either made me smile, emotional, or left me captivated because she has this special ability to make us music fans feel like we have a special connection with her because of how relatable lyrics are.
Having already released her solo EP, The End Of Everything in May 2020, it came as a pleasant surprise that this April, Noah had joined forces with friend and fellow musician PJ Harding to release her debut collaborative EP, People Don’t Change.
Now we all know how Noah’s main strength as an artist is the depth and beauty that she puts into her art as a lyricist, so you will be happy to know that this EP certainly doesn’t disappoint. The opening track, for example, Dear August, wow it just blew my mind away, because when you have both PJ Harding and also Noah singing from the heart it is just so mesmerizing. Within the first 30 seconds of the song, I found myself swaying and I just within that moment that this EP was certainly going to offer something special – regardless of whether this is the first time Noah Cyrus has come on to your radar, or you have been team Noah since day one.
If we look at other tracks that this EP has to offer, then I can certainly say it is very difficult to pick a favorite because they are all delicate, precious, and inviting in their own way. Cannonball, for example, feels quite raw and vulnerable when really concentrate on the lyrics, but with it coming from the soul, it is this which gives the song its character. Compared to previous releases that Noah is known for, People Don’t Change is a good opportunity to see her in a different light, to what you may be usually familiar with, but in a way that really shows us the true versatility, Noah has as a musician.
Another good track to keep an eye out I would probably say is, Slow Train Comin’, because it just has such a poetic presence which is made even more stunning with the harmonies of PJ Harding and Noah Cyrus’ vocals when united.
People Don’t Change, comes to a close with the final track The Worst Of You, and it is hard to describe but it is also one that filled me with such emotion because it tugs on the heartstrings. We have all been in that situation at some point in our lives where we are with a significant other who give us that reason to smile, but also accept them for their flaws as well. The Worst Of You is a perfect articulation of this feeling but comes from a place of love which just adds to its beauty even more.
Consisting of 6 tracks, People Don’t Change, each and every song on this EP is certainly unique in its own way, but also I feel form part of the same overall narrative, which flow so nicely throughout. As I said earlier, it may be different from what you would normally expect from Noah, but if there is one thing you will soon know is that when it comes to the art of music, and growing identity and confidence as an artist, you can be assured that Noah Cyrus will certainly keep you on your toes.
What is next for this talented lady from Nashville is anyone’s guess, but for the time being be sure to check out People Don’t Change, leave your expectations at the door, and just embrace the beauty that you will encounter the moment you press play.
