Pale Waves: You Don’t Own Me

Pale Waves are back with their hot new music video for their latest single ‘You Don’t Own Me’. The new single is taken from the band's new UK Top 3 album 'Who Am I?', which has seen Pale Waves reach brand new heights and create a voice for a generation with its inspiring manifesto that inspires self-love and discovery. Talking about the new album vocalist Heather Baron-Gracie said “For me, music and art is for people not to feel so alone and isolated; I want to be that person my fans look up to and find comfort in”.

The four-piece band from Manchester that consists of front-woman Heather Baron-Gracie,

drummer Ciara Doran, guitarist Hugo Silvani and bassist Charlie Wood formed back in 2014

when Heather and Ciara met whilst studying at BIMM and recruited the other members

shortly afterwards. The band went on to receive critical acclaim with the release of their

debut album ‘My Mind Makes Noises’ back in September 2018, with it entering the UK chart

at #8. They then went on to also bag themselves the NME Under the Radar award, made the

BBC Sound of 2018 shortlist and toured with fellow Dirty Hitter’s The 1975.

The band's latest music video is self-directed by frontwoman Heather Baron-Gracie and her girlfriend Kelsi luck. The video acts as a love letter to early noughties emo and pop-punk, channelling the frenetic energy of the song itself. The video reminds me of a hybrid between Avril Lavigne and Blink-182, with elements of Paramore and Danger Days era My Chemical Romance (might be Heather's fiery red hair though).

The chaotic and energetic filled video is something you'd expect to see on your screens on MTV back in the early 00's, the edgy pop-punk feel of the video is a perfect suit for the bold new single, which happens to also be one of my favourites from their latest album. You can tell a lot of planning and work has gone into the video anywhere from the directing, makeup, styling and set design. It just all ties together perfectly with the single and really does create that feeling that we've been teleported back to 2004. This hot new look really does scream a brand new mantra, identity and era for the Manchester band and I think they are looking better than ever! Talking about the track Heather says “You Don’t Own Me is a song for women about what it’s like to be a woman in this world. How society depicts, judges and criticises women on a daily basis. This song is incredibly important to me and I wanted to represent my own experiences. I also wanted to say a big fuck you to everyone that plays by these fake delusional rules that women and gender need to fit inside a specific box.”
