Sannia Releases Debut Album, 'James'

For this next recommendation we head over to Australia where we find emerging artist Sannia and her debut EP which was released on 16th November 2023. Until this day I had not been familiar with her music, and whether it was fate or something else, it feels like learning of her album, James was a blessing, because other than listening to repeat a lot lately it has also had such a special connection with.

With this said let us have a look at just some of the lushious songs which breath life into this record. Starting with opening track love you like, I like the absolute tender heart felt honesty in this song, as it focuses on that that feeling of your mind being being distracted on that special person in your life, who everyone seems to have an opinion on, but at the same time you cannot help the way you feel about them. The heart knows what it wants. This is expressed brilliantly and ever so beautifully through the lyrics too especially lines such as ‘I love you like a drug, I can’t get enough, enough of you, but you made me go without, now I am coming down till you come around’.

This is very much an open hearted song, and is the type of song which just fills your mind with such goodness and the manifestation of the positive side of affective and love.

From this song we then move onto august, and what makes this so magnificently strong is how through her song-writing, Sannia has this ability to use her powers of expression and the feeling that overflow from her heart into a song which lifts up and pays hommage to those sweet memories that sometimes fill our minds, such as the reminiscing of those precious moments. One of my favorite lines in the song is, ‘...I still pass by that old farm, sorry if I ever made you doubt that you were the best thing in my life going around’. What that says to me and I think to a lot of other music fans, is that even though a person is not necessarily in your life anymore that doesnt mean you can’t have good thoughts about them, which is a very refreshing sentiment to have so we are replacing bitterness with much more positive feelings.

I am going to slightly fast forward rather than go through each song track by track, for an awesome album such as this one there is so much to discuss that there are not enough hours in the day, so instead I will pick out just a few other songs which are worth listening to any other first time listeners out there.

If you are looking for a song which is very candid and honest then I would recommend trigger, because  when you have lines such as ‘if you never meant to hurt me you shouldn’t have said sure, but baby put a bullet in my back, said he loved me right back, put his hands through my hair and pulled the trigger’, then you can easily feel some form of resonance with what Senna is trying to say because she is just being completely honest with her thoughts, something I really admire about her.

Another recommendation would  be travelling, because this is just one of the many tracks on the album where Sannia welcomes a fellow artist on board to collaborate with her, in this case Jason Rodi. I am a fan of this collaboration because it is just refreshing and the lyrics ' I keep on travelling, like I’m your passenger, tell me where to get in line? To find myself by your side’ just have such a poetic flair to them. I also absolutely love the  guitar solo around 3 minute 29 mark because it adds a very nice touch to an already amazing track.

WIth this album packed with honesty throughout if that is the type of think your heart connects too especially if your a music fan like me, then your going to be spoilt for choice. Awake for instance would be one of my automatic go to tracks because Sennia is just speaking her truth. ‘Yeah you took my hand just to hold it over the flame, now i’m burning alive, i’m burning alive, my love, Now I am awake, I see it unraveling, in front of me..’. This is the type of music I live for because it has the ability to make us music fans think and feel, and to really take a moment to take captive of the lyrics and contemplate on the way they effect your own thoughts.

The final song I want to highlight again because its another prime example of Sennia’s talents as a talented and gifted songwriter is lay your heart down. There is a rawness to this song surrounded by tenderness and courageous heart led emotion. That feeling of loving someone, where you think you are giving it your very best, but feeling unacquainted by the other person. That is not easy to deal with, and I am sure there are times in our relationship which have felt like that, and this track gives us mentally the space and time to really face those experiences head on.

With lines such as ‘You say you know you need somebody, that’s going to stand by you, well I gave you my love, I gave you my all, it wasn’t enough was it?.’  There is something special in the way that Sennia expresses herself where the combination of her stunning vocals and her art as a true lyricist and story teller really come together to provide such a narrative.

With 13 songs on offer, this is the debut album of an artist on top of her game, with the power to go on to great and exceptional things. James is just the beginning, and with 2024 I can already sense big things on the horizon for Sannia, so stay alert the fun times are only just beginning.
