Having already been praised by the likes of BBC Introducing, emerging singer songwriter Izzie Derry has been attracting the attention of many music fans, especially in her local music scene of Brighton. With the stars aligned, Izzie prepares herself for the release of her debut album Till We Reach The Sun which will be released on the 3rd November 2023, the perfect way to celebrate what has been a phenomenal journey so far.
Intrigued by all the excitement and all the good things I had been hearing about Izzie especially from friends who are based in Brighton, I was honoured to be given the opportunity to hear the new album for myself - and wow what an beautifully incredible experience it was from start to finish which just encapsulates all the joyous wonder that Izzie possesses as an artist.
The album starts with Try which has a soft and gentle introduction where your greeted with Izzie’s stunning vocals, before leading into the rest of the song which offers such luscious and heartfelt lyrics which just spark a connection in your heart especially the lines ‘I Try, and I try, and I try, but I fail, because I am too much, I’m not enough, nothing I ever do is every good enough, oh well, oh well.’. I am sure there are times where we feel like someone close to us is always looking at us with their judgmental eyes, or picking faults, or doing whatever else to try and make us feel insecure about ourselves, then Try is the perfect antidote to help you to stand your ground. You have a problem with me? Oh well as Izzie rightfully says!
What a great start, I can already tell from this song alone that Izzie Derry is my kind of artist. Moving on to the second track, Wasted Love, I just love this because it just speaks such truth especially about those relationships which make us wonder why we even bothered. Lyrically this song provides a safe space where we can relate to Izzie because she is saying all things which we probably deep down are thinking to ourselves as well, giving us the encouragement to be just as courageous and strong as Izzie.
You would think with words such ‘all you can say is, I should be glad for the time we had together, but I am glad you wasted mine’ or ‘i wonder how many times you have done this before, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, maybe more’ on the surface would mean the song would come across as quite a emotional song, but with the talented storyteller and musician coupling the song with quite a uplifting rhythm she manages to take all that vulnerability and transform it into something far more empowering and pure.
Now if you are already a fan of Izzie when you get your hands on this record you will see a few familiar songs on the line up which have been released as singles at different points over the course of the year such as I Don’t Know Why and title track Till We Reach The Sun, so it is great to see how everything has come together nicely to form the aesthetic of the album.
As am sure you will find those tracks just as beautiful as when you heard them as singles, as you read this article, you may also be shouting out - Thushara what about other tracks on the album which are absolutely new? Well let me tell you this, wait till you hear the album, because your in for an absolute treat. For example, Nothing Lasts Forever just gave me butterflies because of how emotionally powerful it was throughout. It is a song which we see Izzie going that extra step forward with all those vulnerable feelings and finally letting them go as you reach the crossroads in your life so that you can start to be able to move forward and heal.
They sometimes when you keep so much emotion locked up, and put that brave smile on your face to try and convince the world you are ok, while that is not necessarily a bad thing, when you listen to a song like Nothing Lasts Forever you find, in a healthy way you are able to give yourself permission to cry which is actually very freeing.
Another new track on the album is Shake, which I absolutely adore. First, if you love a good guitar and rhythm combo, mighty fine and cool riffs, then you will love this song. The lyrics and vocals are just as epic as ever too as is to be expected, after all this is what Izzie Derry does best. Shake has so many layers to it and you can clearly see it shows Izzie bringing her A-Game.
With 10 tracks, Till We Reach The Sun is such a strong debut album, and hopefully from some of the songs I have picked out, should help you to begin to visualise what a special album this is. As 3rd November 2023 gets closer and closer, I for one am so excited to see how well the album will blossom once out there in the world.
On behalf of anyone who has ever had such a personal connection with Izzie’s music, as well as those first timers like me, I just want to say a massive thank you for gracing this world with one of the most sensational albums I have ever heard.
Spread the news, pre-save the album and even make sure you get yourself to the album launch party in Brighton on the day of the release, because if you are looking for your next UK breakthrough artist - then you have found her!
