From releasing on the biggest and best labels such as the elite Spinnin’ Records and DJ Laidback Luke’s Mixmash imprint, he has taken his sound to every huge festival including the world’s largest, Tomorrowland, Parookaville, Big City Beats @ World Club Dome, to holding a residency at Ushuaia Ibiza and more. As well as this, Plastik Funk was, impressively, the first international DJ post-pandemic to be granted government permission to travel to Asia to perform to their audiences (after quarantine!), as the markets have begun to re-open over in the East – an impressive feat for any touring artist to be able to play in from of crowds again.
Plastik Funk is a house-focused music producer that has been streamed tens of millions of times, aswell as many of his productions landing in at #1 on the industry-renowned Beatport Charts he has also been supported by huge names including David Guetta and Bob Sinclar, as he has also remixed the likes of Swedish pop royalty Robyn.
We spoke to him directly to tell us what he's been up to!
You achieved so much in your career and so many millions of streams on digital platforms. How does Plastik Funk create a hit song?
Thanks so much! For me the clue is in my name, it’s all about the funk! I always lean towards a signature house style that gets people dancing but I also love to work with vocalists and other producers, I like exploring deeper sounds and bringing something different and fresh to my fans.
How did you come up with "Plastik Funk" - such a catchy name!
Thanks! Many years ago Plastik Funk was originally a duo and we had a party brand called Funk Records. Wfe were talking about doing a party called plastic (which is actually spelled ‘plastik’ with a ‘k’ in German) and when we were producing, we wanted to link this to the plastic material of vinyl and then the funk part comes with the music – that’s how the name was born!
What is your advice to whoever wants to start doing music and be successful today?
Do it for the love, no other reason. You really need to have a passion for whatever style of music you want to craft to make sure that you have the drive and authenticity. If you have that, the rest will come naturally.
From the stages of the world to a pandemic forcing us to stay home, how tough was it for you as an artist?
It was a difficult year for everyone, I had so many live dates planned and, like every touring artist, we had to press pause pretty abruptly. It was a shock for everyone as we didn’t know what was to come, or when we could all be together again. I’m lucky enough that I had some great production projects in the work and could keep myself busy in the studio and at home in Ibiza, I focused on working out and using the time wisely. I hope the end is near!
What has been the best show you'll always remember?
Playing Tomorrowland was one of my favourite festival experiences ever, the event has so much history and is something of a bucket list show for everyone. I last played in 2019 on the Robin Schulz and friends stage and the crowd just completely brought the vibes!
You've recently played in Asia. How was it after a long time?
Yes, I was actually one of the first international Top 100 DJs to be invited to play. It was surreal, I of course quarantined upon arrival for two weeks in a hotel room which was a new experience! But it was all worth it to be able to safely see smiling, dancing ravers again! I think the first show “back” for everyone is going to be emotional and that isn’t lost on me!
"I'll Be The One" is your forthcoming single - the Summer hit. What is the message?
Thanks! We wanted the release to revolve around the catchy vocal that flows between this slower, soaring topline at first, before diving into this club track that bursts out. ‘I’ll Be The One’ takes you on a journey and really is a song for the sunshine, I hope you all enjoy and make some memories to it this Summer!
