October continues to be a great season for discovering fresh new music, and this time we were honoured to check out the brand new record The What Gallery by Ontario and Missouri based band Vast Robot Armies.
Consisting of 8 unique and special tracks, this could very well be one of the most phenomenal records that you get your hands on as there is so much to explore, and gives you a picture of Vast Robot Armies versatility when it comes to music. Might sound like a bit of a bold claim to say, but damn it I will say it anyway, Vast Robot Armies are giving me vibes of the likes of Biffy Clyro but with a modern day 2023 boost of life.
If your listening to this record for the very first time, then let us help point out a few tracks which caught our attention. Beginning with opening track Like A Bug, the beat of the drums at the very beginning, with the vocals of Jason Thomas, and the guitars in the background make everything sound so cool and stylish and lead nicely into the rest of the song which will having you humming away. What a great first track to make an entry to The What Gallery.
Passengers which follows, well where do I begin, everything about this song is brilliant - songwriting, rhythm and style. The united vocals members Jason, John and Joe also work very nicely too and add a lot of texture to the song and really help you to place your attention on the lyrics so that your taking all parts of the song in.
What Have You Done Lately, is probably one of my favorite tracks on the album especially if you like an opportunity for a good ol’ sing along then you won’t have any problem joining in especially when you have a catch chorus which goes like this ‘What have you done lately, I can never really tell.’.
Another favourite would be Taking Back The Time, because in my eyes this is where I feel the band really shift things up a few more gears. The track also sees the band inviting Allen Epley to join then, which I think further enhances the dynamic not just on this song, but the rest of the record as a while. Again lyrically too you have so many lines which feel like a music fans dream especially if you have a huge appreciation for lyrics. For instance ‘I keep trying to get drunk but i am just driving around, trying to get lost in sound’. I feel like lines such as that have the potential to become part of the philosophies and mantras for life.
I was going to be good and only a few tracks to tell you about, but I think i would combust if I didn’t also do a special shout out to the penultimate track on the record, Penny Candy which may also be one of my wildcard choices - the hidden secret gem. You have all the elements of what makes a good Vast Robot Armies song such as the intricate and deep songwriting and vocals, but with Penny Candy sonically I am absolutely loving the almost psychedelic undertones the band have infused into the track. Is there no limit to Vast Robot Armies talent?
I will leave it to you to go check out the songs I have mentioned as well as the other tracks which make up The What Gallery. I have heard so many albums over the past 10 months, but no word of a lie, this record by Vast Robot Armies could quite possibly be one of ultimate favourites to date.
With the album officially out now, then make sure you get your hands on it as soon as you can. Big things are coming on the horizon and if you look closely Vast Robot Armies are at the forefront leading the way.
