I owe my life to the West Yorkshire music scene as its been a part of the world where I have discovered some of my all time favourite artists. The latest name to step up to the plate are metalcore band Where Shadows Dwell with their latest record Into The Abyss.
Written and produced by the band themselves, Into The Abyss consist of 4 tracks which entice you to demand and crave more. The album begins with Realm of Sorrow, a punchy adrenaline filled track which will make you instantly feel like opening up a circle pit and letting loose full throttle. The first song of new body of work is so important, because its the clincher, so in the case of Realm of Sorrow, already Where Shadows Dwell are demonstrating they have a lot to offer.
The energy continues with second track Time To Die, again a sterling performance. There is a lot of head banging going on at my end and I love the nice balance between different vocal styles. Metalcore can be a funny ol’ genre sometimes because you tend to have two different sides of the spectrum with fast pace high octane energy while you try and piece together what is actually being said, to the other side where things get super deep. Where Shadows Dwell offers metalcore fans that middle ground whereby listeners like you and me can enjoy the best of both.
Track number 3 is Demons which at just under 7 mins might seem quite lengthy for a song generally, actually works well because the way that Where Shadows Dwell have approached things is by using it to their advantage where everything helps add to the overall atmosphere. Besides who doesn’t love a good ol’ build up! A lot of this album sees the band collaborating with a host of different artists coming on board as guest vocalists, which in its own way helps Where Shadows Dwell to demonstrate their diverse approach to metalcore.
The album closes with Won’t Back Down which sees the band really digging deep as they late their music do the talking, and is a track which you can tell that Where Shadows Dwell are not holding back. Usually when I do any form of article I like being able to research to get a feel of the band's vibe. However, on this occasion it was felt there was very little to go off, so even though I went into this new EP experience blind, I actually found it was left pleasantly surprised.
It might only be four tracks but this album is a classical case of quality vs quantity. For a new listener then Into The Abyss is a nice bitesize introduction, which will hopefully lead you to wanting to invest in the music of Where Shadows Dwell even more. Available to listen to on all major platforms, give the new record a listen today.
